The thesis is based on a quantitative analysis, which means that all elements of the responses must be matched against a model. Data from the survey is used to assess the strength of the model construction in relation to the domain being examined. In other words, the thesis contains plenty of tables, data descriptions, and models. If this is of limited interest, it may be sufficient to read only the introduction and the conclusion.
This thesis examines which factors may contribute to motivating employees in companies to adopt new technologies, as well as how employees develop intentions to engage with such technologies. To narrow the scope of the thesis I have applied established theories regarding what influences individuals’ acceptance of technologies. Specifically, the UTAUT model is used, which in itself is a synthesis of several previously ratified theories, where areas of influence are concretized into factors.
In the questionnaire survey, you were asked to consider three different technologies – Business Intelligence, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – and for each technology you were encouraged to answer questions based on the UTAUT model’s questionnaire framework. Thus, it was also the model that dictated which questions were to be asked. The choice of technology areas is based on their temporal placement in relation to what is currently being implemented in the industry, with AI being the newest and Business Intelligence the oldest.
It turned out that the relevance of the technologies had a significant influence on how the model functioned. For the most familiar technology (“Business Intelligence”), only two factors showed significance in the regression calculations. For Big Data, there were four factors, and for AI there were five factors. There was therefore a clear development in how differentiated a picture one must address, depending on how new the technology is.
In practice, the results show that the model is useful for predicting employees’ intention and acceptance behavior when taking into account the technological timeframe of the technology being examined.
